The Dordogne was one of the original 83 departements created during the French Revolution on March the 4th 1790. Created from the former province of Perigord. The inhabitants of the departement are called Perigordiens.
The river Dordogne is sited in south-central France. The river source is in the Auvergne mountains, flowing through the Limosin and Perigord regions before joining the river Garonne to the north of Bordeaux. Noted for its Cusine and food products related to ducks and geese, namely Foi Gras. It is also one of the most famous truffle areas of France.
The Dordogne is rich in medieval towns, abbeys, castles, bastides and Perigord is known as the land of a thousand and one castles . The Dordogne valley is scenic and popular with visitors, the region offers a significant tourist industry.
The Bergerac region is known as the "Gateway to the Dordogne". The region of Bergerac is famous for its numerous Bastides dating back from the 13th Century and created by both the French and the English during the Hundred Years War.
