Auvergne was the name of an independent county located in the center of France, and later a province within France. The traditional capital of the province of the Auvergne was Riom.
Auvergne attained it name from a tribe of people that once occupied the area. The region was conquered by the Visigoths in the 5th centry, although its inhabiatns resited strongly. The local dialect of Occitan was historically spoken in Auvergne and known as Auvergnat, it is still spoken.
The largest city of Auvergne is Clermont Ferrand. A large part of the Auvergne region is covered by the Massif Central, which is a mountain range that covers almost a sixth of Frances land total. The region is famed for its mineral water, cheese and car tyre manufacture.
