The Lot-et-Garonne departement is in the Aquitaine region, south-west France. It was formed in 1790 from parts of the historic areas of Guyenne and Gascony. It is named after its river, the Garonne, which runs southeast–northwest across the department and it travels through Agen, its capital.
Bastides(walled towns) though less bustling than in their medieval past are still centres of local country life and still very beautiful. The area is littered with bastides and villages whose markets offer an opportunity to taste the local foods as well as mixing with the locals. Three of Lot-et-Garonne's largest castles are Bonaguil, Nerac and Gavaudun. There are many and varied activities to be enjoyed, horse riding, canoeing and boating on the rivers and on the Canal du Midi.
Lot-et-Garonne is alive with tree covered hills and beautiful valleys, farmland and woodland. It is the largest producer of the French prune, with orchards in bloom at every turn in spring jostling for attention with the sunflowers..
Bordeaux and Toulouse are popular airports with visitors to the department. Low-cost flight now land at Bergerac in the Dordogne. Coach travel is a convemient mode of transport to the area for those who do not wish to drive or fly with 2 coaches a week from Victoria Station to Cahors and Bordeaux.
